If you're like me, and you come from a redneck school, you may recall the teachers explaining that the answer is matter. Well, they would be completely WRONG.
The answer is energy, and matter is a STATE of energy. Having never needed to take science in college I may have missed the opportunity to hear the right answer, so today my mind is blown at this new revelation discovered nearly 100 years ago.
Blew my mind. They must have been using outdated sources and textbooks that were in need of some heavy proof reading, or were from the 1940's.
Now that I know, it all makes sense. Curse my redneck school!

Within any closed system energy cannot be created or destroyed without interaction from an outside force
thank you laws of thermodynamics.
Also converting matter to energy tends to cause explosions, i wouldn't look into doing it except on a very small scale :-P

This was middle school stuff in my backwater school. But today, they teach kids in my area NOTHING.
Prime example: 35% of 6th graders didn't know what a RULER was. (Story in Aug 13, 2007 edition of Leader Statesman)

You think that's bad..
How about the fact that AFTER HIGHSCHOOL, some kids are supposed to be taught BASIC MATH at their college?!
I was really suprised when I found that out. I've been bored out of my skull during Math the last year, considering it's things I learned 16 years ago!
I mean, who doesn't know SIMPLE, BASIC math problems which involve the * and / ?
Apparantly.. most of the college students. O_O (Some didn't know what 1*1 was.. UHHH.. O_o;..)

Conservation of Energy An essay by Alex, age 8 My name is Alex and I am going to write about the conservation of energy. According to conservation of energy, energy cannot be created or destroyed. This means that there is always the same amount of energy in the universe. As an example i will use the TV show Dragon Ball Z. In the show, Goku is fighting Freiza and tries to use a spirit bomb, which is like a giant ball of energy. Because energy can't be made, Goku has to borrow the energy from all the living beings in the universe. And that is my essay. True story. This dude at my college was having trouble with his math homework that was like 24x2 or 56/4 so he eventually asked me for help and I did the entire thing in my head in like three minutes. It was retarded. P.S. Marc, you misspelled "destroyed" in the title.

Don't blame the school, Marc. I went to the same one and I knew that... without taking Physics in high school in favor of AP Biology.
You know what the hardest part of my undergraduate Expository Writing class was (aside from the workload)? Learning APA format. All the rest was stuff I had learned by the 8th grade about writing. FFCS was actually a pretty good school for the students who weren't slacking off <cough>, especially when you consider that it is a public school. I learned stuff in AP Government from Coach Mancini (not the sharpest tool in the teacher shed) that my U.S. History professor at Park University doesn't know. I wrote an essay on the Hiroshima and Nagazaki bombings for that class in the 12th grade, got a 91% on it, then recycled it for US History I and got a 96%.

Meh. I can't help it if high school wasn't very interesting. In college I was literally teaching the class in network class. Class flow went like this; Day 1, Teacher lectures for the hour class, Day 2, I finish my assignment before anyone else even dreams of finishing, then I have to reteach and explain everything learned in the previous lecture to every student there. Hell, in PHP class there was two classes. My class, and everyone else's class. I got a special set of assignments and projects while every other student did the normal stuff.

The irony of this is that you suck at math, but excel at coding, which is mathematically based.
Now, if you could tell my the hell every college and university insists on prescribing classes that couldn't have less to do with your major.... Shakespere for a physics major, earth science for a liberal arts major, philosophy for a pre-med! If a high-school diploma is supposed to be the minimum a person needs to survive the adult forkforce, then why do they want to distract you from something actually relevant? A history major freshman knows more high school math than he or she will ever need in thier life, so why does he or she need to be exposed to calculus?

Under the guise of broadening your academic scope, they simply want you to attend (see also pay for) more classes.

me, as a programmer, had to take business science courses, an ethics course taught by a priest, and a *literary criticism* course taught by a feminist that hasn't given a male a grade higher than a B in 5 years. I would have *loved* to take some more math courses if they didn't all conflict with my java courses.

Yeah, I had to take English 1 and 2, a psychology course, a political course (AWESOME CLASS), a business course, and intro to chemistry that I can remember.
In order to keep my insurance, I needed to remain a full time student. I actually liked my business class a lot, so I opted to take another of her business classes to fill out my schedule to remain full time.
I wanted to take another course with Dr. Dinitto, the political teacher. He was THE MAN. His opening line to us was "high school was a pack of lies, and I will now correct it for you." It was the best, least politically correct, class I have ever taken. He had a stamp with the image of a bull, to use on tests. I was the last one still taking the final since I'm a meticulous test taker, and hes like "You know you have an A, now just hand it in!"
Fun times. Albey also had him for a couple of classes I believe.
